Batch Size Calculation OF Liquid Dosage Form

Batch size calculations are very important calculations which are performed in pharmaceutical industries and if you are a professional working in the liquid manufacturing area of the pharma then you must be familiar with batch size calculations for liquid dosage forms.

In this article, we will discuss about

  • Batch size of liquid dosage form?
  • Which Formula is used?
  • Practical example

If you want to learn batch size calculations of oral solid dosage form, you must read it in the following article

OSD Batch Size calculation

The importance of these calculations can be judged by the fact that many experienced professionals are also not able to calculate the batch size of different dosage forms. Learning batch size calculations will be very helpful.

Batch size of liquid dosage form?

We are familiar that liquid dosage forms like syrup, suspension, solution and emulsions are manufactured in bulk & their bulk size is represented in litres but if we talk about in numbers then it is calculated in the number of bottles as polyethylene or glass bottles used for filling of the liquid dosage form. So batch size of liquid dosage forms is the total number of packs filled from the given volume of liquid.

Which Formula is used?

To calculate the batch size of liquid dosage forms, the following formula is used

Batch size = volume in ml ÷ filling volume in ml

Volume in ml is the total bulk volume of the liquid prepared and filling volume is the volume which is filled in the bottles.

Batch Size Of Syrup/Suspension

Suppose that a batch of syrup is prepared in the liquid manufacturing area of the pharmaceutical industry. The total volume of the syrup prepared after manufacturing is 2000 litres.

The packaging specifications in the batch packaging record mention that the 250 ml syrup should be filled in a glass bottle.

What will be the batch size in terms of packs?

We will use the above-mentioned formula which is

Batch size = volume in ml ÷ filling volume in ml

First of all, we will convert the volume of litres into ml.

We are familiar that one litre is equal to 1000 ml so multiply 2000 liters by 1000 and the answer will be

2000×1000 = 2000000 ml

Now put the values in above formula

 Batch size = 2000000 ÷ 250 = 8000

Result

8000 bottles will be filled at 250 ml per bottle and our batch size will be 8000.

Batch Size Of Ear/Eye Drops

The eye drops are filled in collapsible dropper bottles and the same method is used but the difference is that the filling volume is small.

Example

Suppose that a batch of eye drops is manufactured and its volume in litres is 100 litres and the filling weight is 15 ml.

Calculate the batch of eye drops with the help of the following

Batch size = volume in ml ÷ filling volume in ml

The volume in ml will be the 100×1000 = 100,000 ml

Put the values in the above formula

Batch Size= 100,000 ÷ 15 = 66,666

Result

The batch size of eye drops in terms of packs will be 66,666 droppers or packs.

Conclusion

The calculation of batch size for liquid dosage forms is very simple but has great importance in pharmaceutical industries.By using the above mentioned method anyone can easily calculate the batch size of any liquid dosage forms.
