Crospovidone is a cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone or Crosslinked PVP and is used as a super disintegrant in manufacturing of oral solid dosage forms in pharmaceutical industries.

Mechanism Of Crospovidone

Crospovidone is insoluble in water and gives its disintegration effect by swelling without forming gel.

Uses Of Crospovidone

• Crospovidone is used as a super disintegrant for manufacturing tablets and capsules by wet granulation,dry granulation and direct compression.
• It is also used to improve the dissolution profile.
• It is used to enhance the bioavailability of drugs.
• Crospovidone is used as a solubility enhancer.
• Kollidone CL M is used to stabilize the suspension.

Concentration Used

Crospovidone is used as a disintegrant in 2-5% concentration.

Crospovidone is available in following grades and these grades vary on the basis of particle size.

• Kollidon CL-M is micronized grade of kollidon CL.
• It has finest particle size.
• It is insoluble in all solvents 
• It is good for small sized tablets,granules and pellets.
• It is used for stablizing the suspension both oral and topical suspensions.
• It is used as solubilizer in transdermal patches.

Kollidon CL-SF

• SF in Kollidon CL-SF represents ‘Super Fine’ means this grade has super fine particle size.
• It is use in Orally Disintegrating tablets.
• It gives creamy mouth feel in Orally disintegrating tablets.
• It also gives good binding to Orally Disintegrating Tablets.
• It enhances disintegration rate.

Coating Of Core Tablets Containing Kollidon CL

• Tablets that contain kollidon CL in their final blend should be coated carefully, if we are using aqueous coating.
• Because in core tablets the Kollidon CL may show swelling properties when water comes in contact ,so before aqueous coating a seal coat in organic solvent should be applied,to coat the tablets with smooth surface and finishing.

Storage

Cross Linked Polyvinylpyrrolidone is hygroscopic so it should be stored in airtight containers.
